ART: ROLL A LANDSCAPE
To wrap up our Social Studies unit on Canada, students created a piece of landscape art by rolling dice and adding different features (i.e. hills, mountains, trees, flowers). Students made connections to the different landscapes in Canada and compared their final piece of art of different parts in Canada. (i.e. Oceans on the east and west coast, trees/forests in British Columbia).

MATH: AREA AND PERIMETER BATTLE
Working in partners, students used whiteboard grids and dice to battle against each other to see who could create shapes with the largest area and perimeter. Students took turns drawing different sized quadrilaterals based on the numbers they rolled on the dice. They then calculated the area and perimeter of their shapes. Great strategy was used when students decided where to place their shape on the grid.

ART: VALENTINE'S HEARTS
To celebrate Family Day and Valentine's Day, students created some beautiful pieces of art to share with their families. First, students used the Ziploc bag water colour technique (colouring on a Ziploc bag and spraying water) to create their heart. Next they explored different lines, patterns and textures to outline their heart on construction paper.

MATH: AREA AND PERIMETER ROBOTS
To finish off our Measurement unit, students created Area and Perimeter Robots. By following the success criteria, students were sure to include the minimum number of shapes and displayed their calculations for finding the area and perimeter of the different shapes.

ART: STAINED GLASS TREES
This multi-step art project was enjoyed by the entire class! Students began by cutting tissue paper squares and gluing them to their paper to replicate a stained glass effect. Next, students used water colour to paint their background. After cutting out their stained glass trees and gluing them to their background, we used hole punch circles to represent snow.

LANGUAGE: BOY CALLED BAT
This past week we finished our class novel study of the book A Boy Called Bat. Throughout the shared readings, students practiced their reading skills by making connections, predictions and inferences. They listened attentively to hear new vocabulary words and learned their meaning. The class wrote a few pieces of writing as we read the book. For example, they practiced their persuasion skills by trying to convince me to get a class pet like Bat has at his school! We also tracked Bat's character development and discussed how he grew throughout the book. The students also enjoyed creating their own Kahoot quizzes for their classmates. A Boy Called Bat is a trilogy and the class can hardly wait the read the next two books!
