End of 2019 and Start of 2020

ART: Snowmen At Play

Students used a "Roll a Snowman" template to determine which kind of arms, scarf, hat, buttons etc. to use for each snowman. We discussed the perspective of the snowmen and how it looked as if we were drawing the snowmen from below them looking down.

ART: Learning Buddy Holiday Card

In December, we shared some holiday cheer with our Grade 1 Learning Buddies! Students used paint and Q-Tips to create "dot art" of snowmen. After, they wrote a special note to their buddies.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Provinces/Territories of Canada Posters

Students first began this project by independently researching a Province or Territory of Canada. They took notes by using a graphic organizer and researched topics such as location, climate, population, major cities and natural resources. After completing their own research, they collaborated with a peer, shared their learning and displayed the information by creating a poster.

MATH: Measurement
We began our measurement unit by discussing different units of measure for length, height and distance (mm, cm, dm, m and km). We brainstormed which unit would be most appropriate for different objects. For example we would use centimeters to measure a sour key, meters to measure the carpet, and kilometers to measure the distance from school to Best Buy. Students went on a measurement hunt around the classroom and estimated the length or height of different objects. Next, we discussed how to convert between different units.

Here are 2 visuals we have been using to help us convert units of measure:
